This is the first entry for our “Meet your Barista” interview series. The barista/customer relationship is a pretty close one. If you’re a regular you may see your barista almost everyday. They know just how you like your drink, how your work is going, and they’ve probably met you kids. Through those five-minute conversations at the register or coffee bar our baristas slowly get to know you and you them. This series will continue those conversations and let you get to know the people who make your coffee a little bit better.
And who better to start with than our long-time morning barista: ALBERTO !
Q: You’re obviously not from Austin. Where are you from originally?
Alberto: Italy, I am from a small town called Castiglion Fiorentino. It’s about an hour outside of Florence.
Q: So what brought you to Austin?
Alberto: My wife brought me here because I married an American girl from Houston. Her name is Julie. She was studying abroad in Italy, where we met and got married.
Q: So what is the biggest difference between here and Italy?
Alberto: I don’t really think there is much of a difference. There is more history in Italy. Here people say they’ve been here since the 1900′s there people have been there since before Christ. But the day to day social life is pretty similar.
Q: So you’ve worked at Teo for a long time now, what do you like about working here?
Alberto: I like all the employees, Matthew(the owner), Mel the gelato maker, and all the customers. I like the environment of the shop, how it has a real neighborhood feel to it, with lots of regular customers who come in.
Q: So what’s your favorite drink at Teo?
Alberto: single espresso
Q: And what about your favorite gelato flavor?
Alberto: Peanut Butter and Nutella
Q: What do you like to do on your day off?
Alberto: My favorite thing to do is to go clothes shopping, then in the evening maybe go to dinner or go see a band. In the winter I like to go see the Austin Symphonic Orchestra perform. They are really good.
Q: We’ve been watching a lot of the summer Olympics in the store. If you could compete in one sport what would it be?
Alberto: I would do the gymnastics. The rings.
Q: What is a fun fact about you that would suprise your customers?
Alberto: I used to be a DJ in nightclubs in Italy. This was when all the boy bands were really big and so when Americans would come in I would play NSync and Backstreet Boys, those were always big crowd pleasers.
If you have a question you would like to ask Alberto just leave it in the comments and we will see that he answers it!
